Someone told you that you can do your Google profile yourself? True for creating it. Setting it up without losing it is another story.
"You can do it yourself": half true
When you ask for a price on a Google Business Profile, some people tell you it is free and you can do it yourself. That is not wrong: creating a profile takes a few minutes.
But creating a profile, and setting it up so it brings you calls without getting blocked, are two different things. Think of a shop on the biggest avenue in your city. Opening the door is easy. Running it so customers come in, and so the landlord does not throw you out, means knowing the landlord's rules. Here, the landlord is Google.
Google watches every profile, all the time
Google checks profiles with automated systems. It looks for fake businesses, fake addresses and names stuffed with keywords. That is good for customers.
The problem is that a real business can trigger those checks without meaning to, just by editing its profile the wrong way or at the wrong time. An edit that looks harmless can be enough. And Google gives no warning first: you find out once the damage is done.
The three most common bad surprises
When a check is triggered, this is what most often happens to businesses that manage their profile alone:
- A new verification: Google asks you to prove again that your business exists, often with a video of your premises, your sign and the street. Until then, some edits stay blocked.
- A suspension: the profile disappears from Google Maps. To get it back, you have to file a request with Google and wait for an answer, sometimes for weeks.
- Rejected edits: you change a detail, Google does not accept it, and nobody tells you why.
What it really costs
Meanwhile, your phone stops ringing from Google Maps. Customers searching for your trade in your area call the competitor who shows up in your place.
For a small business, a few weeks without a profile can cost far more than a proper setup. And a suspended profile is much harder to bring back than one set up correctly from the start.
A real example: a roadside assistance business in Algiers
This month, we optimized the profile of a towing and roadside assistance business in Algiers. There was a lot to do.
We did not change everything on the same day. The work was spread over several days, following our method.
The result so far: a complete, clear profile, and no new verification requested by Google. You cannot see this work from the outside, but it is what protects the profile.
What a well set up profile brings you
A well-optimized profile does more than put you "on Google". It works for you every day:
- You show up when someone searches for your trade near them.
- Customers see your services and prices before calling, so they call better prepared.
- Your reviews, and your replies to them, reassure people who are hesitating.
- You get calls, messages and direction requests straight from Google Maps.
